The process, covered by a patent application to the INPI, treats biogas and delivers carbon dioxide [CO2] in liquid form and methane [CH4] under pressure.
The CH4 can, for example, be supplied in standard 80-litre bottles, under pressure of 210 bars or more, bottles used by vehicles running on CNG (compressed natural gas).
The CO2 supplied can be used to accelerate the growth of plants grown in greenhouses.
Treated biogas is produced by decomposing plant and organic waste from a farm or community, in purpose-built reactors, many of which are currently in operation. As with existing processes, before treatment with the new process, the biogas must be purified, i.e. freed from H2S, water vapour and other volatile organic compounds [VOCs] that are typically present.
Existing processes for CH4 and CO2 separation require significant investments, which are inaccessible to small biogas production plants.
The new process, based on the physical characteristics of the CH4-CO2 mixture, is characterized by modest investment, a small number of components and high reliability.
